Introduction

We are looking for a mission-driven, experienced inclusive leader to join our team as Director of Design & Training. As a senior member of our team reporting to the COO, the Director of Design & Training will play a key role in overseeing the design and development of Canada Learning Code’s programs for online, in person and hybrid delivery. This role will work in conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and implement strategies and tactics to ensure dynamic learning and teaching experiences. 

This is a full time, salaried role. Direct Reports include 1 Content Design Manager and 1 Training Lead.

Canada Learning Code is Canada's leading national charity championing digital literacy education. Placing a special emphasis on women, transgender and beyond binary adults and youth, people with accessibility requirements, racialized people and new comers to Canada. Canada Learning Code is proud to work from coast to coast to make sure that all Canadians have access to the knowledge they need to prosper in our digital world. Originally founded as Ladies Learning Code in 2011, the organization has evolved to run programming for adults, youth and educators through programs Ladies, Girls, Kids, Teens and Teachers Learning Code. 

Though 2020 has certainly gone differently than we expected it to, at Canada Learning Code we remain focused on our mission. Today, we are delivering live-online learning experiences across the country for adults, youth and educators. To date, Canada Learning Code has reached over 600,000 learners through an in-person experience.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Participate in key decisions as a member of the senior leadership team
  • Assist in formulating the company's future direction and supporting tactical initiatives
  • Collaborate in developing strategies that assist in delivering meaningful learning experiences and optimizing funder requirements that have a direct impact on strategic business plans 
  • Develop and manage reporting tools for management and Board meetings
  • Research and evaluate strategic opportunities for the organization 
  • Articulate and synthesize information to key points for management presentations, and for strategic/operational decision making


People Management

  • Coach Design & Training team via providing guidance on day-to-day issues, insights into complex business transactions, providing coaching and support for people managers on the team.
  • Provide ongoing and clear direction, performance management and career development support to the program Design team
  • Manage all Design & Training team member needs (hire through retire) and ensure that each of your team members has reasonable support, resources, tools and guidance to be happy and successful within their roles
  • Lead team communication strategy by facilitating regular team meetings, one-on-one meetings, update emails, etc. 


Content Development and Project Oversight

  • Overall responsibility for the learning management ecosystem (LMS) including system, people, security, and course and content management.   
  • Lead the needs analysis process, provide appropriate solutions and design, develop and deliver a variety of learning initiatives, projects and development programs. 
  • Implement effective instructional design solutions and adult learning methodologies
  • Conduct in-depth research on current industry issues, trends and best practices to provide a basis for content development, and to support CLC key priorities and initiatives.
  • Oversee designated curriculum and course development projects and ensure the timely and successful launch of high quality programming.
  • Ensures that the work of Instructional Designers and Developers maintains the integrity of the initial design blueprints, the design values of the CLC, and the established timelines for the project.


Training Delivery & Evaluation

  • Ensure the training program covers the need of the learner and that desired principles and skills are being taught in the most learnable ways possible
  • Ensures consistency in the delivery and application of training standards across the business and oversees the planning, prioritization, and development of new training programs and initiatives, ensuring that these programs and initiatives are consistent with the business overall strategies, objectives, and needs.
  • Conducts research, approves, and makes further recommendations for appropriate learning management systems and databases.
  • The Director of Training and Development additionally develops, implements, monitors, and maintains both initial and ongoing training programs across the business.

Required Skills

About You 

  • You have knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design techniques, and demonstrated application of this knowledge in program development and delivery
  • You have knowledge of the principles and practices for accessible online, blended, and technology enabled teaching
  • You have knowledge of learning technology, such as D2L’s Brightspace, Teams, Zoom and how each platform can be optimally used in different scenarios
  • You have the ability to organize and prioritize work; manage multiple tasks and projects; and function effectively as a self-directed leader of multiple initiatives
  • You have demonstrated strong leadership, coaching and team building skills to foster, motivate and support an inclusive environment of high performance, trust and collaboration. 
  • CTDP or CTP certification is an asset.
  • You are fluent in English, French is an asset.Must be able to provide a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable sector screening.


Location

We are currently fully remote due to Covid-19. Though our HQ is Toronto we are open to applicants across Canada. Our return to office plan is a hybrid model. That means you can continue to work remotely anywhere in Canada. For team members located in GTA you will have the option to return our Toronto office space when it is safe to do so - an entire floor at Queen and University (right around the corner from a subway station)! 


This role may require some evening and weekend work. Some travel may be required if/when safe to do so. 


Reporting

This role reports to our COO, Nancy Madonik.
